whippets v Henley 3s: match report

The Whippets made the short trip down to Henley RFC on the 10th of October to kick off OURFC’s 26/27 campaign. Warm ups and unit splits were led by Captain Dougie McWilliam who handled the forwards and halfback combination of Henry Williams and Roly Narayan Hull for the backs. The boys displayed an impressive amount of posession early doors, getting up to 14 points through powerful carries over the Henley try line, using weapons like Dom Crestani burrowing through the Henley forwards.

As the game progressed, the squad noticed space in the Henley back-field, meaning the kicking game became a consistent weapon for the boys, spearheaded by fly half Williams. Utilising constant up and unders to gain territory quickly, lots of opportunities opened up out wide for the talent on the wing, with a fresher Charlie Stock, retuning from a successful tour, dotting down 2 tries in the corner in his first in-season game for Oxford.

With all the momentum on our side, gaps in the defensive line began to open up, almost all of which were promptly capitalised on, with many breaks in the midfield and finished off out wide. The aforementioned Narayan Hull did a great job of both sending the lads through these gaps and managing the game taken box kicks, rounded off by a try out wide following a chain of offloads in the midfield.

The day was a big one for the forwards, dominating possession in the line outs and crashing over the line, with further tries coming from the likes of McWilliam, Draper and Davies. The nails in the coffin came from Hyslop and Williams to round off a hugely successful start to the season, with all the boys rearing to rip back into training this coming Monday.

A huge thank you to Henley RFC for being fantastic hosts and testing opposition.

This Friday 16th October the Men's Blues get their Iffley Rd campaign underway as they take on Premiership opposition in Leicester Tigers. There are limited tickets left here:
