Iffley Road is stocking up on tiger food in preparation for the Men's Blues' season opener, as the Leicester Tigers come for tea in search of victory next Friday. After hosting 2,000 spectators for St. Edwards vs. Abingdon in September, week 1 of Michaelmas term opens the Oxford sporting calendar by welcoming to Iffley Road the first of various Prem Rugby sides to take on the Dark Blues this season, and welcoming back University students and Oxford residents alike with the first installation of Friday Night Lights for the 2026/27 season. If previous iterations are anything to go by, this box office feature promises exciting rugby and a raucous atmosphere at the home of rugby in Oxford.

The trend over the past few seasons has been not unlike that of the beloved children's book, in which the Tiger 'ate all of the supper that was cooking in the saucepans, and all the food in the fridge, and all the packets and tins in the cupboard.' In November 2023, despite some smart game management earning the Blues an early lead of 6-0, Tigers' physicality proved too much over 80 minutes, resulting in a 33-6 victory. In the 2024/25 season, on a cold January evening, after a cagey start that was similarly well managed by the Blues, the Tigers prevailed as the dominant force over a Blues side shaking off some dust after the Christmas break, exacting a 52-0 win over the men in Dark Blue. The match report for that fixture, boasting a side with Prem experience, can be found here.

In the January 2026 fixture, however, the Blues established a fightback based on the fundamentals of their game plan, which brought them parity throughout the second half of a close-fought game. Bolstered by the arrival off the bench of Māori All Black, and this year's Blues captain, #1324, Reed Prinsep, for his first appearance since retiring from the Western Force, the Blues exerted pressure through an insistent tactical and attacking kicking game. Whilst going into the half 28-5 down, they scored twice in the second half to bring the final score to 40-17. Player of the Match Ben Shaw, Blue 1323, was omnipresent in attack, manufacturing Henry Henderson's opening try with a well-placed chip, after a break by Otis Walker, Blue #1307, from an attacking scrum. He was also on hand to finish spectacularly in the second half, dotting down at full stretch in front of the Pavilion, as a Dark Blue scrum strike manufactured space in the backfield for Blue #1284 Harry Bridgewater to deftly poke the ball into. While it may not have been enough to overcome the Tigers, the Blues looked fresh after their Winter tour to Australia, and showed promising signs that carried through to their Varsity Match victory in February, in which similar tactical kicking proved fruitful in returning the trophy to its rightful home.

Twenty years ago this season, a Blues side preparing for the 2006 Varsity match edged out a Leicester Tigers side 18-17, shocking the visiting side. Amongst the Tiger's ranks that day was future British & Irish Lion Dan Cole, who would go on famously to retire as England's second-highest cap winner, with 118. Also in that side were British & Irish Lions Graham Rowntree and Tom Croft, and Matt Smith, who would win 228 caps for Tigers and is now Academy Head Coach, returning to Iffley Road once more for this fixture. The Oxford side, while less developed than their Tigers counterparts, also boasted internationals in (future Blues captain) Blue #1111 and Wallaby Joe Roff, and future England 7s international, Blue #1099 Tom Tombleson, who served as England Rugby's longest standing S+C coach for ten years until 2024. The Oxford Mail dubbed the game the "best performance of the season" in their match report. The Blues came from 14-0 down, hooker Winston Cowie, Blue #1106, scoring a 76th minute try that was converted from the touchline by Craig McMahon, Blue #1109, to secure a historic win.

Next week, as the Oxford term begins, and Iffley Road is graced once more by the clatter of studs on concrete and a melee of Dark Blue jerseys, Reed Prinsep's men will be attempting to tie together the game management and attacking flair displayed previously, hoping to deny the Tigers in this, the fourth successive meeting between the sides. Fresh from an unbeaten tour to Southern France and Spain, the Blues embark on their campaign to defend the Varsity title, their first challenge being to fell the mighty Tigers.
