Match report: Blues v Brunel

By Milly Gladstone #436
The stadium was buzzing for the Blues’ first home game against Brunel 2s. With Red Bull and Pizza Hut taking over the Pavilion, the atmosphere was electric, and the Blues were ready to go, warming up in anticipation of what would be a brilliant game.
The Blues charged through the tunnel and onto the pitch to receive the kick-off from Brunel. They put up a strong first battle, defending their territory with early breaks from Leila Wang-Gaouette and Anna Jenkin. The girls were off to a flying start, with a strong defensive line and Liv Rosin proving to be a star at the breakdown as she chased down the rucks and fought for turnovers.
Eventually, Brunel broke through and scored a couple of tries. However, this gave the team time to regroup, catch their breath and charge into the second half with renewed aggression.
Whilst the girls were in the changing room, the stadium remained full of enthusiastic dark blue energy, with the Blues only three tries down at 0-17. The girls stormed back onto the pitch as the second half began. It started with Elinor Bowman on the wing, on the stadium side, receiving a pass from the backs and hitting the gas. Meanwhile, Brunel fought back just as hard.
There were some very close tries from Brunel, saved by none other than Isabelle Corbett at full-back, alongside centre Poppy Burrows, who defended her territory with ferocity. Combined with Beth Anker, the three made a formidable centre trio, producing consistent breaks. Every break was, of course, followed by a roar from the crowd.

Heading into the final 15 minutes, the Blues’ lineout was spectacular. A short, low pass instead of a high ball left Brunel stunned, and a quick pass to none other than Flora Gillies meant the Blues gained significant territory against the Yellows. The ball was moving quickly, with plenty of forwards getting their hands on it, and the likes of Victoria Chew and Zoe Gordon bringing endless energy.
The ball made its way to Poppy Burrows in the final five minutes. She charged down the pitch, and the stadium roared with her. A nifty pass to Isabelle Corbett meant the Blues were practically in the try zone. The entire crowd was on its feet, with the Men’s section making sure they were heard as they cheered on the girls. A few breakdowns kept the crowd on the edge of their seats before Beth Anker dove over to score the try! What an ending to an incredibly entertaining game.
The effort from the Blues was outstanding at 7-36, and a massive congratulations to all those who made their debuts. Captain Mel Morley did a brilliant job leading her team, and the support from the crowd was unforgettable.
Thank you to everyone who came out to support!
The Women*s next home game will be on the 11th November at Iffley Road. Be sure to come down once again and support our girls as they wade their way through this challenging BUCS campaign.
