A final congratulations to everyone who was involved with college rugby and Cuppers Finals Day this season. Transcription below:
Freddie Spence (Bowl-winning CCSMM captain):
Cuppers is huge, Cuppers is better than uni rugby I think, because you're playing with your mates, you're playing with college mates specifically. You see everyone all the time, it's a really good way to build college culture.
Marged Williams (Cup-winning Castle captain):
I think Cuppers is about experienced and non-experienced players coming together to learn rugby and to play rugby. As much as you can play rugby for a long time, you still have things to learn and it's so lovely when new people join us and they show us all these different things. I love getting people into rugby, it was so nice for us to have five newbies on the team today who had never seen a rugby ball before, so it was the most wonderful thing to do.
Oscar Cobb (winner of Peter Bridges Player of the Match):
The culture is just incredible. When I came here as a fresher, I hadn't been playing rugby for about two years and I wasn't sure if I'd keep going. Then, coming to NCRFC (New College RFC), they take you in so much and it's so lovely it got me back into rugby and I'm now here.
Spectators asked "what do you guys think is the most important thing about college sport?":
1: Team spirit, it's really good social as well.
2: Yeah, it's good fun getting to know people. I did join for the socials but I've stayed for the sport so it's a nice balance.
Spectators asked "you're looking very glamorous, where are you off to next?":
3: Hilda's Ball right after this, very exciting.
"So what made you come down to the rugby first?":
4: The fact we're in the final, I mean, how could you not?
3: We have to support, we have to show some team spirit.
"And what do you guys think is so important about college sport?":
4: I feel like it's such a good social opportunity within college, you get the cross-year connection.
3: 100%, you can get out and about, have a bit of chilled sport. Sometimes a bit more competitive, we're looking forward to Netball Cuppers as well.
Cameron Tilley (Cup-winning New College Captain):
Hi, I'm Cameron Tilley, I'm a third year at New and we've just won the Cuppers trophy. I think we're a bit unique, you know, we get together every week, we do touch every week, social every week, we're a bit of a family. If you're a member of the club and you see someone around college, you have a chat, you have a catch up.
Cuppers, I mean it's the highlight of my year to be honest. NCRFC means so much to me, it's such a big part of my life here at uni and I think it's one of the best events to happen in all of Oxford.
