Leaving a legacy to Oxford University Rugby Football Club

For generations, Oxford University Rugby Football Club has provided student-athletes with opportunities that extend far beyond the rugby field. The friendships formed, lessons learned, and experiences gained through OURFC often remain with players throughout their lives and careers.

Many of our alumni and supporters wish to recognise the positive impact that their time at OURFC had on their lives by leaving a gift in their Will. A legacy gift is one of the most meaningful and enduring ways to support the Club and help ensure that future generations of Oxford rugby players can benefit from the same opportunities.

why leave a legacy?

Legacy gifts help provide long-term financial stability and support the continued development of Oxford University Rugby Football Club. Such gifts can contribute towards facilities, coaching, player development, outreach initiatives, and other priorities that enable the Club to thrive.

Many alumni and friends choose to leave an unrestricted legacy for the Club’s general purposes. This allows OURFC to use your gift where it is most needed and to respond to future opportunities and challenges. Others may wish to support a particular aspect of the Club that reflects their own interests, experiences, or priorities.

Whether large or small, every legacy gift can make a lasting difference and help preserve the traditions, values, and opportunities that make Oxford rugby unique.

How to Leave a Gift

If you are writing a new Will, or amending an existing one, OURFC can be named as a beneficiary. Once you have decided to leave a gift, the process is usually straightforward.

We strongly recommend that you seek professional legal advice when preparing or updating your Will to ensure that it accurately reflects your wishes and complies with all relevant legal requirements.

If you are considering leaving a legacy to OURFC and would like to discuss the possibilities in confidence, please contact us at admin@ourfc.org. We would be delighted to answer any questions and help ensure that your gift is used in a manner that reflects your intentions.

Suggested wording

The following wording may be helpful when discussing your wishes with your solicitor:

"I give the whole or % share of the residue of my estate, or free of tax the sum of £ (____ pounds), to Oxford University Rugby Football Club (OURFC), to be permanently endowed, with the income arising therefrom to be applied for its general purposes, and I declare that the receipt of the Chairman, President, Treasurer, or other duly authorised officer or officers thereof shall be a full and sufficient discharge to my Executors."

Thank you for considering a legacy gift to Oxford University Rugby Football Club. Your generosity will help preserve and strengthen the Club for generations of Oxford rugby players to come.

Tax Benefits

Gifts left to registered charities are generally exempt from UK Inheritance Tax. Where a legacy is directed to a charitable entity associated with OURFC, the gift may therefore qualify for inheritance tax relief, subject to the relevant legislation and individual circumstances.

In addition, the rate of Inheritance Tax on an estate may be reduced from 40% to 36% if 10% or more of the net estate is left to qualifying charitable causes.

As tax rules can change and individual circumstances vary, we recommend seeking professional legal and financial advice when considering a charitable legacy.

Deed of Variation

If you are the beneficiary of a Will, you may be able to transfer all or part of your inheritance to a charitable organisation through a Deed of Variation. Subject to the applicable legal and tax requirements, gifts made in this way can be treated as if they had been made directly by the deceased, potentially providing inheritance tax advantages while allowing the charitable beneficiary to benefit during your lifetime.

Professional advice should always be sought before entering into a Deed of Variation.
