Secretary's Word : Off the Field Action

It is hard to let a game such as last week’s to go by without mention. The first half was pretty even, but the second half was even worse!! In simple terms we came up against a strong professional side that physically out played us. As a neutral, one could argue that considering the opposition we performed admirably. But as a player it’s unacceptable. No team, underdog or not, graces a field with the anticipation of losing – what a waste of time! We ran onto that field with a winning attitude, but that’s life - time to move on. Tonight is all about amending last week’s errors and moving another step closer to lifting the MMC trophy.

Life at the Skip has finally taken a turn for the better, at least for one member. Last week you read how the members of the Castle stitched young Dr. Jenks up, as they attempted to humiliate him in front of his ideal woman. He who laughs last… In reply to “Are you coming to the cinema tonight”, I overheard Jenks reply “Sorry I’m out with my girlfriend”. Does she know about this, Jenks? It must have been the flowers (thanks the Castle) you gave her!?!

Jonny Rivers, currently playing for the Hounds, also struck form lately. Training as a medic never leaves much time for a social life. It is no surprise then that JR has discovered an adequate alternative – ‘Hotchicks.com’. He met Lucinda online last week and went for a drink a few days later. Although she has to commute from Brighton, they plan to see each other on a regular basis!

This coming Wednesday the club have arranged a social with the Athletics’ girls. What you’re about to read next will probably come across egotistical, but hey I’m just the reporter. As a dual member I also receive group emails from the Athletics club. To quote the girls social secretary, “Finally, the date you've all been waiting for has been confirmed… I'd say that this is definitely one not to miss. I've heard the rugby boys are pretty fit…” Who am I to argue with a girl!

The following Wednesday in Week 4 (or the Nov 3rd) is the date confirmed for the eagerly awaited Captain’s Cocktails. The event will begin at Iffley road here at the clubhouse, before moving on to DTMs nightclub in the centre of Oxford. Tickets cost £8 (£7 with a flyer), which includes free drinks at Iffley road and free entry to DTMs. The dress code, inspired by our youthful skipper Dave Lubans, is school disco! Tickets can be bought from Ross Lavery, James Gaunt, Peter Raftery, or myself.

On a final note, the Manor has become even more of a centre of activity with the production of this piece now a weekly occurrence. The West Wing buzzes away piecing together the stories from the past week, leaving the East Wing to edit and correct errors induced by oversized (pork sausage) typing implements. Not exactly the Times’ press, but nearly. Next time there’ll be news from the athletics social, Vinny’s Cocktails and the usual updates from OURFC life off the field.
